Madonna – I’d Rather Be Your Lover

Souvent oublié, Bedtime Stories est pourtant l’un des albums les plus importants de Madonna. Retour sur cet album résolument R&B qui marque un tournant dans la carrière de l’artiste.

Un album doux et romantique après le sulfureux Erotica

Avant la parution de Bedtime Stories (1994), Madonna sort son album Erotica en 1992. Album au style complètement différent de son successeur, il s’agit d’un opus majoritairement aux sonorités dance, deep house et jazz, où il y a également du spoken word. Il s’agit d’un concept album parlant d’érotisme et de romance, mais aussi de sujets estimés taboo à l’époque, tels que le SIDA. Ici, Madonna a un alter ego, Mistress Dita.

Accompagnée d’un livre de photos intitulé Sex, dépeignant ses fantasmes érotiques, Madonna a fait couler énormément d’encre durant cette ère : la critique ainsi que ses fans ont très mal reçu l’album à l’époque, en raison de son contenu jugé osé.

Bien que Erotica soit maintenant mieux reçu par la critique et que l’impact de cet album ait été remarqué autant par la critique que par le public, il était impératif pour l’artiste d’adoucir son image et de se rapprocher à nouveau de son public : d’où la naissance de Bedtime Stories.

Both the label and her publicist Liz Rosenberg did everything they could to reverse the damage from Madonna’s last projects. They had her release the soundtrack single “I’ll Remember” to bring her a family-friendly hit and further increase speculation that Bedtime Stories would convey her apology.

Bedtime Stories, un album résolument R&B

En comparaison de ces précédents opus, Bedtime Stories est un album majoritairement R&B, très romantique et dreamy. Il s’agit d’un mélange de pop, hip-hop et R&B.

À la production, on retrouve notamment la crème du R&B avec des producteurs tels que Dallas Austin, Dave Hall et Babyface.

Seul un morceau n’est pas R&B, il s’agit du titre éponyme, “Bedtime Story”. Il s’agit d’un titre aux influences électroniques, auquel Björk et Nellee Hooper ont participé. Cet album marque un grand tournant dans la production et les genres musicaux mis en avant : il s’agit de la première fois où Madonna s’essaye au R&B, mais également à l’électronique, qui sera ensuite très présent dans ses opus suivants, notamment son successeur Ray Of Light.

Madonna – Take A Bow

Nominé à la 38ᵉ édition des Grammy Awards (1996) dans la catégorie “Meilleur Album Pop”, 4 singles ont émergés de l’opus : “Secret”, le titre éponyme “Bedtime Story”, “Human Nature” et le hit “Take A Bow”.

“Take A Bow” a été intégralement produit et écrit par Madonna et Babyface. Une langoureuse balade typiquement R&B des années 90, ce titre a été un énorme succès à l’époque : il est resté hissé à la place n°1 du Billboard Hot 100 durant 7 semaines.

Le dernier single de Bedtime Stories, “Human Nature”, est particulièrement intéressant autant dans la production musicale que dans les paroles. En effet, ici, Madonna répond à ses détracteurs l’ayant fustigé en raison de ses parutions osées. Musicalement, le titre nous rappelle TLC, la manière de chanter de la Reine de la Pop rappelle celle de T-Boz.

Madonna – Human Nature

Avec Bedtime Stories, Madonna a créé une opportunité pour reconquérir à nouveau son public et adoucir son image afin de se rendre plus accessible.

Un autre des singles de l’album, “Secret”, est particulièrement catchy et s’est retrouvé dans les premières places de nombreux classements à travers le Monde à l’époque.

The song was initially produced by Giuseppe Grondona who used looped samples to give a hip hop, neo soul feel to the composition. He then recorded drums and sent the draft to London based singer songwriter Lisabel, a good friend who he collaborated with in the past for her cover of the jazz standard The Way You Look Tonight / Will Stay in My Heart. Lisabel toplined and wrote lyrics for the track, talking about her own experience.. A hardship in love that turned her relationship into something even stronger, more intimate and pure. Nikola Kovačević, a long time friend and collaborator, was then approached to record keys, bass and to produce the track, mix and master it. Stylistically the song was inspired by the 3 artists’ shared love for Hip Hop Jazz and Neo Soul, being heavily influenced by artists such as Dilla, Robert Glasper, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, The Roots..and so on.

But who’s Giuseppe?

From Bari in southern Italy, Giuseppe graduated in drums and percussion at the Conservatory of Music when he was 21 years old. He performed as a contemporary percussionist at New York University and in Paris, and has toured and recorded as a drummer throughout Europe. In the UK he has performed with Bosco De Olivera (Airto Moreira, Sade,Terry Callier, Hamish Stuart, Kate Bush), Femi Temowo (Wynton Marsalis, George Benson, Amy Winehouse), Simon Carter (Jamiroquai), Svetlana Vassileva (Moby), Annabel Williams (X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent), John Wheatcroft (Carl Parmer) and Andrew McKinney (James Taylor Quartet). In 2009, Giuseppe played with the band performing in the movie ‘Nine’, inspired by Federico Fellini’s ‘8½’, and directed by Rob Marshall. More recently, he’s performed in Los Angeles in two prestigious and international music events, “Thursday Night Vibe” and the “Los Angeles International Indie-Music/Film Summit”, in London at the Ealing Jazz Festival and Vortex jazz club with his family band the Maurizio Grondona Group. As an educator he has taught at Drumtech (2006), Tech Music School (2009) and since 2012 at BIMM London where he is currently Lead Lecturer.

In 2020 Lisabel released her debut album ‘A Work of Art’, a collection of 14 tracks all written by
herself and co-written with London based keyboardist and producer Nikola Kovačević.
The album premiered in CLASH magazine and received praise from publications around the world.

In August 2022 Lisabel released her funk, synth based and soul infused track ‘Flor de Louis’
garnering positive reviews and support from the likes of Variance Mag, Meral Mag, Atwood Magazine,
Noctis, Ear Milk and others.

In March 2023 Lisabel released her latest single ‘Keep Me Afloat’, an experimental, soul and
electronic piece driven by an emotional and intimate storytelling that touches the themes of mental
health struggles and life’s burdens. The single received praise from the likes of Notion, Earmilk,
GoingSolo and others. The video of the single won 2 Best Music Video Awards and has been officially
selected by 6 film festivals.

Lisabel has had a chance to play in some of London’s most renowned venues such as The Half Moon,
Pizza Express Jazz Club (Soho and Chelsea), O2 Academy Islington, 606 Jazz Club, The Workshop &
Roadtrip, The Water Rats, Novikov Lounge, Jak’s Chelsea, The Ned London, The Savage Garden, Primo
Bar, The Rocksteady , The Spice of Life, The Bedford Balham, Next Door Records and Signature Brew.
